Will remote working be permanent for all after Covid-19?

Being a real estate agent operating in primarily second home location does not bode well under the current health crisis we are living. This thought has been worrying me a lot, and naturally I have been thinking of how our company Noll Sotogrande can adapt to meet this challenge.

As the pandemic has grasped us all, we have been hearing and reading about the so called “new normal”. The reality is no one yet knows what this means and what it may look like. I was therefore very encouraged the other day when I read an article which highlighted that companies who adopted technology 20 years ago replaced every company that didn’t. And, that companies who adopt remote working will replace every company who doesn’t in 20 years.

Here is my hypothesis. If remote working does grow in popularity, then maybe Sotogrande will continue to thrive, not as a secondary residential resort, but as a principal one.

Lockdown across the world may have highlighted a number of factors which may never have been exposed without the obligatory nature of being forced to stay home. Factors such as efficiency (economic and operationally), and credibility that remote working can deliver positively on overhead costs and employee work quality.

If the employer’s benefit is efficiency, then the employees’ benefit must be life balance. Having flexibility to meet family and work schedules and generally organizing work around your life is a huge positive for most people.

Another upside is that employers can hire the best person they can afford, arguably from anywhere in the world. Today, most companies employ staff living within a radius of approximately 40 km, a comfortable commutable distance. In so doing they are disqualifying themselves from most of the world’s talent.

Companies with remote teams can hire the best people they can afford no matter where they are living. Similarly, the best people, those most talented, will be able to negotiate remote working terms from their current employers or they will look for opportunities elsewhere that do meet their remote working preference.

With Sotogrande offering exceptional lifestyle and quality standards I am quietly confident it will grow in popularity as a primary residence. Its infrastructure, schools, healthcare, super-fast internet, airports, weather, and leisure options are hard to beat.

Apart from this, nowadays it is possible to work remotely from Spain and only pay taxes as a non-resident – Call for further information. Charles +34 607 911 661
