The Race to… Sotogrande! Real Club de Golf Sotogrande Could Become the DP World Tour Championship’s Host in 2026

The DP World Tour Championship is not just another golf tournament. It is the final event of the Race to Dubai, one of the biggest weeks of the European golf season, with a $10 million prize fund and some of the world’s leading players expected to compete. The 2026 edition is still officially scheduled for 12–15 November at Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai.

The current leading players in the Race to Dubai, and therefore the main names in position to qualify, are:

  • Patrick Reed — confirmed
  • Rory McIlroy
  • Eugenio Chacarra
  • Aaron Rai
  • Ryan Fox
  • Casey Jarvis
  • Jayden Schaper
  • Andy Sullivan
  • Matt Fitzpatrick
  • Jacob Skov Olesen

But this year there is an unexpected Sotogrande connection because of the current security concerns in the Middle East, the DP World Tour has had to consider alternatives in case the final cannot safely take place in Dubai. Specialised golf media have reported that Real Club de Golf Sotogrande is one of the serious contingency options (See properties near the RCG Sotogrande here). No official move has been announced, but the fact that Sotogrande is part of that conversation is interesting in itself. (Source: TenGolf)

Why Sotogrande Makes Sense for the DP World Tour Championship's 2026

A tournament of this level needs much more than a beautiful golf course. It needs excellent greens, experience hosting international events, good airport connections, quality hotels, restaurants, transport, privacy and a destination capable of receiving players, sponsors, media and spectators with very little notice.

Real Club de Golf Sotogrande already has that credibility. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and opened in 1964, it has hosted major DP World Tour events and sits inside one of Europe’s strongest golf destinations.

And this is where Sotogrande becomes especially strong because it has a golf ecosystem. Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, Valderrama, La Reserva, The Alto Club and nearby San Roque Club create an extraordinary concentration of championship golf within a very small area. Valderrama’s history includes the 1997 Ryder Cup, while both Valderrama and Real Club Sotogrande continue to attract major international tournaments.

Golf, Hotels and International Access

A tournament of this level needs much more than a great golf course. Sotogrande already has the infrastructure to host an international audience comfortably for the DP World Tour Championship's 2026:

  • International access: Gibraltar Airport is the closest option, while Málaga Airport connects Sotogrande with a much wider European and international network.
  • Five-star hospitality: SO/ Sotogrande offers five-star resort living, golf, dining and a 3,500 m² wellness area, while Hotel MIM Sotogrande, part of Lionel Messi’s hotel collection, brings a more intimate Marina experience. Add private villas and high-end rentals, and players, sponsors and guests can choose between resort, waterfront or complete privacy.
  • Private accommodation: Villas and high-end rental properties give players, families and sponsors more privacy, space and flexibility.
  • Marina accommodation: Visitors can stay close to the waterfront, restaurants, cafés and shops while remaining only a short drive from Real Club de Golf Sotogrande.
  • Restaurants and hospitality: Sotogrande already has an established international dining and hospitality scene, from the Marina to the beach and resort areas.
  • Wellness and recovery: Spa facilities, gyms and wellness services are already part of the destination, which is especially relevant for professional players and their teams.
  • Short distances: Golf courses, hotels, beaches, the Marina and residential areas are all relatively close to one another, making logistics much easier during a major event.
  • Privacy and security: Sotogrande is designed around low-density living, gated communities and discretion, which suits players, sponsors and high-profile visitors.

That means Sotogrande would not need to create an international experience around the DP World Tour Championship's 2026, the experience is already here.

Golfers Are Part of Sotogrande’s Discovery Market

This is where golf and real estate start to overlap. A lot of international buyers do not come to Sotogrande because they are actively looking for a property. They come because someone invited them to play Valderrama, Real Club Sotogrande or La Reserva. They stay for a few days, have lunch at the Marina, drive around the different residential areas and slowly start to notice what is around them.

Then, sooner or later, someone asks the question: “What does a house here cost?”

We see this quite often in Sotogrande. Golf is one of the ways people first discover the area, but it is usually everything around the golf that makes them stay interested. They realise Sotogrande could work not only for a weekend or a tournament, but as a second home, a winter base, or simply somewhere they want to spend much more time.

Why International Buyers Choose Sotogrande for Privacy, Golf and Lifestyle

Dubai, Marbella and Saint-Tropez all do luxury in a very visible way. They are glamorous, social, energetic and, in many cases, built around being seen but Sotogrande is almost the opposite. Here, luxury is quieter. The plots are larger, the streets are greener, the homes are more private and there is much less pressure to display wealth.

Some buyers love the energy of Marbella or Dubai. Others are specifically looking for somewhere more discreet, where they can have security, space and a very high standard of living without feeling surrounded by noise or attention.

That is where Sotogrande tends to win people over. You still have excellent golf, restaurants, the Marina, the beach and international schools, but the overall feeling is much more private and established.

For many of our international buyers, it is not about choosing the “most luxurious” destination, is about choosing the type of luxury that suits them.

The Best Sotogrande Areas for Golfers

For golfers considering property, the right area depends more on lifestyle than handicap.

  • Kings and Queens offers established villas, large plots and easy access to Real Club de Golf Sotogrande and the beach.
  • Altos de Valderrama is highly private and ideal for buyers who want security and proximity to Valderrama.
  • Sotogrande Alto gives easy access to several courses and a wide variety of homes.
  • La Reserva suits buyers looking for contemporary architecture, views and newer amenities.
  • San Roque Club offers another golf-focused residential option close to Sotogrande.

There is no single best golf area. There is a best area for the way you want to live.

What This Says About Sotogrande

Dubai remains the official venue for the 2026 DP World Tour Championship. But Sotogrande being considered as a serious alternative tells us something important. The Real Club Golf Sotogrande may be the course, but the real strength is everything around it: international access, hotels, restaurants, security, privacy, residential quality and decades of golf culture.

If golf has brought you to Sotogrande and you are beginning to wonder what living here might look like, I would be delighted to help you understand the different areas and find the property that makes sense for you.
